Does PS 158 have Integrated Co-Teaching (ICT) classes?
We typically have at least one Integrated Co-Teaching class (ICT) in every grade. This is a hallmark of our commitment to being a fully inclusive community. These general education classes blend general education students with students receiving services according to their Individualized Education Plan (IEP). This model ensures all students benefit from a shared learning environment where everyone's needs can be met. An ICT class is a flexible teaching model with two fully qualified teachers, a general education teacher and a special-education teacher. Both teachers are equal and work in collaboration to support all the learners in the classroom.

How is technology integrated into classroom instruction?
At PS 158, technology is thoughtfully integrated into all subject areas. We view technology as a tool to enhance and expand our authentic teaching and learning. Technology has to be purposeful, in a real way. We model and teach safe, responsible online behavior - digital citizenship as early as Kindergarten. Technology allows all of our classrooms connect to a world beyond our walls, inviting in other authors, experts and resources, as students are taught to research, use identified resources. Currently in grade K-1, there are ipads for students to utlize for texts and math interactive games in small groups. In Grades 2-5, we have Chromebooks available to be used by every student. We help students to become ready, responsible digital citizens in an ever-changing modern world.

How often do students have opportunities for movement?

We believe that daily movement is essential for every child’s growth and success. Regular movement boosts energy, sharpens focus and supports overall health. Every day students have a 25 minute recess. Our recess team organizes and facilities recess. There are opportunities for structured and unstructured play. In addition, students experience movement in Physical Education class at least twice a week. Daily movement is also incorporated in classrooms.

Do students go on field trips?

Field trips broaden and enrich the curriculum. We see New York City as an extension of our classrooms. Each class participates in multiple field trips across the school year.
